Family Workshop – Effective Writing
In John’s 3-hr. family-oriented workshop, parents and students will learn time-tested and -proven fundamentals to successfully plan, write and successfully edit a paper. This workshop balances principles of the writing process with practical techniques refined over 20 years in teaching home school students.
Students and parents learn how to:
– select successful topics
– develop paraphrasing and natural voice skills
– document information and avoid plagiarism
– use simple but powerful pre-writing thinking and organizing tools
– demonstrate superior critical and original thinking skills
Optional:
– write a high school- or college-ready paper with evaluation
– rewrite an evaluated paper
Location
In Gainesville, or at a family’s home location.
Dates
Scheduled at the family’s convenience.
Cost
$125 per family at the Gainesville location, or $175 in the family home anywhere in Northern Virginia. Outside Northern Virginia, email John for information. Optional student papers are $45 per paper, or $75 with a rewrite.

John understands that many parents not only lack confidence in understanding the writing process, but in how to evaluate and grade their students’ essays and other written assignments.
John can help parents understand how to successfully help their students to:

Workshop Specifics
The Effective Writing Workshop. Length: 2.5 hours. Minimum attendees: 10. Fee: $25 per attendee, includes handouts. This workshop takes parents through the entire paper writing process, from foundational principle to practical techniques, with a focus on “how to” for implementing into a family’s homeschool daily curriculum.
How to Evaluate Student Essays and Written Assignments Workshop. Length: 2 hours. Minimum attendees: 8. Fee: $35 per attendee, includes handouts. This detailed, hands-on workshop includes both instruction and practice grading actual student papers.
